Defibrillators pads are a critical part of modern emergency medical equipment used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. These adhesive pads are designed to be placed on a patient’s chest to deliver an electric shock through an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) or manual defibrillator. Their main purpose is to restore a normal heart rhythm in individuals experiencing life-threatening arrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia.



When the heart stops beating effectively, oxygen supply to the brain and vital organs is immediately reduced. In such emergencies, every second matters. Defibrillator pads play a key role in ensuring that the electrical shock is delivered safely and efficiently to the heart muscle, increasing the chances of survival.


There are generally two main types of defibrillator pads: adult pads and pediatric pads. Adult pads are used for patients above a certain weight or age, while pediatric pads are designed for infants and young children. Pediatric pads reduce the energy level of the shock to ensure it is safe for smaller bodies. Some modern AED systems automatically adjust energy levels, but specialized pads are still widely used in many healthcare and emergency settings.


Defibrillator pads are typically made with conductive gel that helps improve electrical contact between the skin and the device. This ensures minimal resistance and more effective shock delivery. Proper placement of pads is essential—one pad is usually placed on the upper right side of the chest, while the other is positioned on the lower left side near the rib cage. This allows the electrical current to pass directly through the heart.


In emergency situations, defibrillator pads are designed for quick and easy application, even by individuals with minimal medical training. Clear diagrams on the pads or AED device guide users step-by-step, making them highly effective in public spaces such as airports, schools, gyms, and offices.


It is also important to note that defibrillator pads have a shelf life. Over time, the conductive gel can dry out, reducing effectiveness. Regular inspection and replacement are necessary to ensure readiness during emergencies.
